Over 260 motorists across the country were detected using their mobile phone while driving between yesterday morning and this morning.

Gardaí held a national day of action for a 24-hour period between 7am yesterday and 7am this morning, during which a total of 266 drivers were found to on their phone behind the wheel.

So far this year 762 motorists have received fixed penalty notices for mobile phone use while driving, which carry a €120 fine and three penalty points on a licence.

This is a four-fold increase on the daily average of 60 motorists who were detected using their phone while driving during 2024.

Over 21,500 drivers received fixed penalty notices last year for the offence.

Gardaí warned road users: "Driving while on your phone distracts you and takes both your eyes and your full attention away from the road."

"This is highly dangerous and potentially life-threatening for you and other road users. Yet, there is a very simple and easy solution - just don't do it," they added.
