Delight as first babies of the New Year arrive

As the New Year festivities were under way across the country, Ireland's newest citizens were making their entrance to the world.

Among the first babies born on 1 January 2025 was baby Bradley to delighted parents Eve Colley and Eric Tyrell from Dublin at the National Maternity Hospital.

Bradley is the couple's first child and was he born at 19 seconds past midnight.

Across the capital at the Rotunda Hospital, Martha Gilroy-Kelly and her partner Jack Byrne, welcomed a baby boy, Theodore Byrne, at nine minutes past midnight.

Eight babies were born at the Rotunda between midnight and 8am, and Theodore's birth brought the total number of babies born at the hospital to more than 900,000 since it opened its doors over 275 years ago.

At the Coombe Hospital the first baby to arrive in 2025 was a boy at 2.25am to Wendy and Darach Griffin from Athboy, Co Meath.

In Cavan General Hospital, Shannon Kelly gave birth to baby Naoíse Beggan at 12:53am, weighing in at 7lb 13oz.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Ms Kelly said she was delighted that Naoíse had arrived safe and well.

"I’m so happy she’s here. I’m relieved ... I’m just so happy, I haven’t slept yet myself! I’m delighted that she’s here safe and sound," she said.

In Sligo, Ornagh Burke and Ronan Cox welcomed their baby girl at 3.54am at Sligo University Hospital, while a baby boy called Rowan was born at Cork University Hospital at 12.20am, to mum Shannon Gibson from Cork city.

Shaunagh Carberry from Longford, and her partner Sean Healy, had a little girl at 2.24am at the Regional Hospital, Mullingar.

In the south midlands, Rebeka Girault Mohit and Kabir Mohit welcomed a baby boy at 2:59am at the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise. The family from Athy, Co Kildare have another little boy who will turn one tomorrow.

It was a busy night at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where seven babies have been born since midnight, with the first, a baby boy, arriving at 1.32am.

In Co Kerry, baby Féile was born at home to parents Andrea Thornton and Eoin Murphy at 5.41am, weighing 8lb 3oz, with the assistance of midwives Sinead Murphy and Kirsty Hawthorn from University Hospital Kerry.

The first baby in Mayo arrived at 6.33am at Mayo University Hospital. Baby Fíodhna, weighing 10lbs, was welcomed by parents Naíomh Higgins and Chris Byrne from Claremorris.

Fíodhna Ann Byrne was born at 6.33am.

Fíodhna's big sister, Meibhín, cannot wait to meet her.

Her parents said the midwives and doctors in at MUH "couldn’t have done any more for us, they are a great team".

Nearby in University Hospital Galway, Shay Aengus Richardson English was the first baby born at 6.03am, weighing just under 9lbs to parents Orla and Andrew.

Two babies were born at Letterkenny University Hospital this morning.

Sharon and Lee O'Hara welcomed daughter Norah at 8.30am, weighing 8lb 10oz, while a short time later at 9.06am, parents Niamh and Eric Roberts, had a baby boy weighing 6lb 3oz.
