Retail Ireland has reported a slight increase in the average spending by households this Christmas.
It comes as retailers are expecting the traditional surge in the number of shoppers for the January sales.
Retail Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the retail sector, is looking forward to continuing increases in average household spending into 2025.
However many retail outlets will have limited opening hours today, while others are not returning to normal trading until tomorrow.
Supermarket chains Tesco and SuperValu are reopening today but trading hours in different outlets will vary.
Aldi, Dunnes Stores and Lidl branches are closed but will reopen tomorrow.
For shoppers who do intend venturing out this St Stephen's Day, there will be no DART or any other Iarnród Éireann services running.
Luas services are set to recommence from 9am.
Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus will operate on a Sunday schedule, with intending passengers advised to check timetables in advance of making their journey.
Over 8,000 arrests for retail crime
Meanwhile, 8,460 people were arrested in connection with retail crime over the last year as part of Operation Táirge.
The operation was launched in December last year and aimed to crackdown on organised retail crime, where a number of people act together to steal goods and resell on the black market.
As part of the operation, over 20,000 charges and summons were issued over the last 12 months.
The development has been welcomed by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, who said that retail crime has significant economic impacts on the retail sector.
