Motorist clocked at 100km over speed limit among 2,244 speeding detections

A motorist travelling at more than 100km over the speed limit was one of around 2,200 drivers detected for speeding since 29 November.

The driver was clocked at 184km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R731 at Monamolin in Rathnure, Co Wexford.

Another was detected travelling at 121km/h in a 50km/h zone during a garda road enforcement campaign, which will continue until 6 January.

In the second week of the operation, between 6 and 12 December, three people were killed on the roads and there were 13 collisions which left a number of people with serious and life-threatening injuries.

Over the past week, 178 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Gardaí said that around 504 vehicles have been seized for a range of offences, and 329 Fixed Charge Notices were issued to drivers for using a mobile phone.

Since the operation began on 29 November, 2,244 drivers have been detected speeding.

Among those were a driver travelling at 124km/h in a 60km/h zone on the N4 at Drishoge, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Roscommon, while in Co Dublin, a motorist was clocked at 186km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M1 at Donabate.

In Co Tipperary, a driver was caught at 121km/ph zone on the N52 at Arcroney; another was detected at 165km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N80 at Dysart, Stradbally in Co Laois.

So far this year 167 people have been killed on Irish roads and gardaí are appealing to all road users over the Christmas period to take extra care and to slow down.
