The funeral of eight-year-old Malika Al Kattib, who was fatally stabbed during an incident at her home in New Ross last Sunday, has taken place in Co Waterford.

She was laid to rest in the Muslim plot at Kilbarry Cemetery in Waterford city following Janazah, or funeral prayers, at the cemetery, led by Imam Rashid Munir of the city's Al-Munir Islamic Centre.

Up to 100 people attended the burial. Among them were members of the local Muslim community, as well as representatives from Malika's primary school and neighbours in New Ross.

Earlier, her mother Aisha (31), joined other women from the local Muslim community as they carried out the 'Ghusl' ritual, in which the body was washed in pure water before being wrapped in a shroud.

This took place in a private room at University Hospital Waterford.

Her white coffin was then carried by horse-drawn carriage some 7km from the hospital to the cemetery, where relatives carried her to the grave.

Around 100 people attended Malika's burial

Among the many flowers atop her graveside were bouquets marked 'uncle's angel' and 'daughter'.

There were then prayers for Mailka at the Islamic Centre in Newtown, Waterford city.

A man was charged on Wednesday with her murder, and the attempted murder of her mother.
