Red and Orange warnings expire as Storm Bert brings flooding

Tens of thousands of homes are without power this afternoon and many counties are recovering from severe flooding overnight as a result of Storm Bert.

The ESB has said that 11,000 homes, farms and businesses remain without power as of 5pm, while an extensive clean up is under way in Killybegs in Co Donegal after the main street there flooded.

Flood waters estimated to be around a metre high poured down Bridge street in Killybegs last night.

Elsewhere, many roads around the country were closed due to fallen trees and flooding.

In Cork, the village of Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh was heavily flooded and was impassable to cars for a time, while in Galway,motorists are being asked to avoid the road between Leenane and Maam Cross in Conamara, which is closed due to a landslide.

Counties Cork and Kerry experienced widespread flooding, with Kerry County Council now asking motorists to avoid Listowel town centre as the river Feale has breached its banks.

Transport services were also disrupted by the storm - the train line between Dublin and Belfast has now reopened after it was closed this morning due to flooding.

Some bus services in the areas most affected were also cancelled and the Road Safety Authority advised motorists to avoid any travel during the storm window.

All Irish Ferries sailings between Rosslare Harbour and Pembroke in Wales today have been cancelled, with the company saying passengers who still wish to travel can be accommodated on the Dublin-Holyhead route.

An ESB spokesperson said progress has been made restoring power around the country and the latest figures show there are 11,000 properties without supply - down from around 60,000 this morning.

The Status Red rain warnings have been lifted but a Status Yellow wind warning for Carlow, Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow comes into effect at 5pm this evening and will remain in place until 2am tomorrow.

There are also a number of Status Yellow wind warnings in place tonight and for tomorrow, mainly impacting counties on the western and southern coasts.
