A voluntary redundancy programme at RTÉ has not yet received Government approval.

The organisation's Director General Kevin Bakhurst told a staff meeting that it was "incredibly frustrating" that the scheme has not yet been given the go-ahead.

Mr Bakhurst said that they submitted plans for a Voluntary Exit Programme (VEP) to the Government in March or April.

"There have been various times when they said it is only a couple of weeks away, and that we will get approval, but they came back quite recently asking for more information," Mr Bakhurst told staff.

He said the Department of Media has approved the scheme and that they are now waiting on the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform to sign-off on the plan.

"I am very aware that there is an election and they may not have wanted to sign it off ahead of the election, and there are no discussions to be had during the election campaign, but they know it is a priority for us," Mr Bakhurst said.

He added that once the election is over, it will be a priority for him and the RTÉ Chair to go to Government and make the case that they need approval for the exit scheme.

Last year, RTÉ announced plans to reduce staff numbers by up to 400 by 2028, with 40 voluntary redundancies due to be delivered this year.

Mr Bakhurst said that opening the exit scheme would have helped control overheads and spend this year.

"We haven't been able to do that, the delay has cost us several million euro this year and we've made that clear to Government," he added.
