The body of an Irish man who went missing while hiking on the Italian island of Sardinia has been found, according to local media.

An intensive search operation had been under way since the alarm was raised on Friday afternoon after he failed to return from a hike on the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, between Masua and Cala Domestica.

Italian national broadcaster RAI and other Italian media outlets reported that the man's body was found on the side of the Canale de Sa Rocca Niedda by a search dog.

It is understood that the 39-year-old was holidaying with family members on the island and was hiking with his brothers when they split up and he continued on his hike alone.

A member of his family raised the alarm and search operations continued throughout Friday and Saturday night.

Alpine Rescue personnel and dog teams were deployed, as well as a search and rescue helicopter and piloted drones equipped with thermal imaging technology.

Local newspaper L'Union Sarda has reported that a helicopter was used to recover the body which was in a remote location.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said that it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
