An Irish man has gone missing while hiking on the Italian island of Sardinia.

Italian national broadcaster RAI and other Italian media outlets are reporting that the 39-year old went missing yesterday afternoon while hiking the third stage of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, between Masua and Cala Domestica.

It is understood that the man had been hiking with his brothers when they split up, and he has not been seen since.

The search for the missing man continued through the night and is ongoing.

RAI has reported that an Alpine Rescue team and drivers are involved in the search, as well as a search and rescue helicopter and piloted drones equipped with thermal imaging technology.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said that it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
