A teenage boy has died following a single-vehicle crash in Co Donegal.

He has been named locally as 16-year-old Kian Dawson from Derry city.

The crash occurred on the R240 at Cross, Quigley's Point at around 11.15pm last night.

The driver of the vehicle - a man in his 20s - was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast to be treated for his injuries. He is understood to be in a critical condition.

The road remains closed to allow for a forensic examination of the scene by gardaí.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to contact them at Buncrana Garda Station at 074 9320540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Those with dashcam footage who were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make it available to gardaí.

Kian Dawson's football club Don Boscos paid tribute to him and said he gave them "many wonderful and happy memories".

In a Facebook post, it said: "Kian was the most genuine, well mannered and unassuming young lad you could meet. He was a credit to Don Boscos but more importantly to his mum and dad, Fiona and Emmett.

"Kian will be forever remembered by his coaches, team mates and friends at Don Boscos. We are also thinking of you all at this heartbreaking time."

The club expressed its condolences to Kian's family.

It added all club activities have been called off as a mark of respect.

In a separate crash in the county, three people have been hospitalised following a two-car collision in Inver.

The collision occurred shortly before 9am.

The three people were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment. Their condition is not yet known.
