A man who died after he got into difficulty in the sea off the Cork coast yesterday has been named as 55-year-old Stephen O'Callaghan.

It is understood Mr O'Callaghan, from Ashburton Hill in Cork city, entered the water to assist a number of young people at Inch Strand, near Midleton yesterday afternoon.

The Irish Coastguard in Valentia said it was informed that five people had got into difficulty in the water off Inch Beach at 3pm.

Four people were rescued from the water by members of the public.

The man who rushed in to the sea was taken from the water in a serious condition.

He was transferred to Cork University Hospital by ambulance where he later died.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out and a file will be prepared for the Coroners' Court.
