Around 30 tents have been pitched by asylum seekers along the Grand Canal in Dublin.

The new encampment is located between Mount Street Bridge and Huband Bridge, less than 400 metres from the International Protection Office on Mount Street.

Similar tents have previously been removed from the area, with metal barriers placed along both canal banks to prevent more tents being set up.

Some of the new tents have been erected inside the fencing, which was installed by Waterways Ireland at a cost of €30,000 per week.

The latest figures from the Department of Integration show there are 2,509 male international protection applicants awaiting an offer of accommodation, as of today.

Asylum seekers will be accommodated on State land - Harris

Taoiseach Simon Harris has said the Government's position on asylum seekers is that they will be accommodated on State-owned land, after the return of tents in the Mount St area of Dublin.

Asked this morning about the situation around Mount St and the canal, Mr Harris said the issue was "a global migration challenge" that must be addressed at "EU level".

However, he also said that "Team Ireland" is doing what it can with an accommodation shortage, and that the Government's policy continues to be to accommodate asylum seekers on "State-owned land".

"I'll be very honest with people that they [tents] will arise and do arise," he added.

However, he said when this takes place officials will "engage with people" and address "any tented situation which is unauthorised", a response he said that is "in marked contrast to what had been allowed to happen on Mount Street" in the past.

His comments come after protesters last Saturday pulled down some fencing on the banks of the Grand Canal in Dublin.

A coalition of protest groups had gathered outside the Department of Integration on Baggot Street saying they wanted the fences along the canal removed.
