Over 3,800 motorists were detected speeding on Irish roads during the most recent garda roads policing operation.

This included someone driving at 161km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R188 at Cootehill, Co Cavan, and another caught doing 186km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N24 near Piltown, Co Kilkenny.

It was "disappointing" that people continued to "travel at dangerously excessive speeds" despite awareness campaigns, gardaí said.

From 7am last Thursday until this morning, gardaí ran a campaign focused on enforcing road traffic laws in the days around the August Bank Holiday weekend.

During that time there were three fatalities and 12 people received serious or life-threatening injuries in collisions, gardaí said.

There were also more than 1,000 garda checkpoints to test for intoxicants.

Gardaí carried out 4,900 roadside drug and alcohol tests and arrested 180 motorists for driving under the influence.

Over 565 cars were seized by gardaí during the operation, the majority for having no tax or insurance and more than 100 for learner permit holders being unaccompanied by a fully licenced driver.

There were 294 motorists fined for using a mobile phone and 106 fines for people not wearing a seat belt.
