Former Republic of Ireland football player Anthony Stokes has been recharged over a suspected drug seizure in Dublin last year.

Gardaí arrested the ex-Celtic and Sunderland striker on 6 January 2023, following alleged driving incidents in Dublin.

They had charged Mr Stokes, 35, with offences under the Misuse of Drugs and Road Traffic Acts.

He was accused of unlawful possession of cocaine and having it for sale or supply, as well as four counts of dangerous driving.

The former Premier League player is also accused of not having a driving licence or motor insurance on the same date and failing to produce them at a garda station within ten days.

However, the drug charges were struck out in January on the application of defence solicitor Lorraine Stephens due to delays in obtaining directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and a forensic certificate of analysis.

Dublin District Court had previously heard that the suspected value was €4,500, but it has emerged that the analysis put the alleged seizure value at around €3,000.

Mr Stokes, represented by Ms Stephens, was granted an adjournment until September to enter a plea and for his trial venue to be considered.
