Man who died in suspected assault in Co Kerry named

A man who died following a suspected assault in Co Kerry in the early hours of this morning has been named as 42-year-old Padraig 'Paudie' O'Connor.

Mr O'Conor and his family are are originally from the Scartaglen area, outside Castleisland.

At around 12.30am, emergency services responded to a report of a man who was found unresponsive and with serious injuries outside a house at An Caisleán Mór in Castleisland.

He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out, and gardaí have said the results are not being released for operational reasons.

A man in his 40s was arrested and is being held at a garda station in Co Kerry. It is believed he was known to Mr O'Connor.

The scene at An Caisleán Mór was sealed off for a forensic examination.

Bobby O'Connell said the man's death was 'traumatic' for the community

Fine Gael Councillor on Kerry County Council Bobby O'Connell said it was "absolutely devastating news for the town of Castleisland and indeed for the whole district.

"The young man is very, very well known to the wider area. This is a very close knit community and for this to happen in a residential area in our town this morning is very traumatic for everybody concerned.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the young man’s passing is very, very traumatic for this area."
