The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has warned media outlets of a fake statement purporting to be from the organisation that was issued last night.

The statement claimed that IFA president Francie Gorman had resigned with immediate effect following the outcome of the Nature Restoration Law vote in the EU.

The IFA said however that the statement is completely false, it was not issued by the organisation and media outlets should disregard its contents.

The false statement issued at 11pm yesterday said the IFA wanted to apologise to members in the face of crop failures in Ireland caused by climate change and referenced disinformation and delay in dealing with biodiversity loss.

It was issued from a gmail account, using the name of an IFA officer and contained IFA graphics and logos within the body of the release.

The false statement was published by a number of media outlets last night before being taken down from their websites later.

The IFA has asked media outlets to verify the authenticity of any communication that appears to come from it, by checking on its website, the IFA app, its X account and other social media channels where official statements can be found.

IFA president Francie Gorman continues in his role and is today attending the Congress of the World Farmers Organisation in Rome.
