A 17-year-old boy has died in a workplace incident at a recycling facility in Co Cavan.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident at the Wilton Recycling facility in Crosserlough, near Ballyjamesduff shortly after 4.30pm yesterday.
The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body has been removed from the scene to the mortuary in Cavan General Hospital and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.
A file will be prepared for the Coroner's Court.
The Health and Safety Authority said it is aware of the incident and has launched an investigation.
The company has offered its deepest condolences to the young man's family, who it said are local to the area, and to its other employees.
A spokesperson said that as a mark of respect, the company has closed its gates until further notice.
Local councilor Trevor Smith said word of what happened filtered through to the local area yesterday evening.
"This is a terrible tragedy for our area, the locality is in complete shock," he said.
Mr Smith said the young man who died was in a summer job.
"He was very popular, mad into farming, a really popular young guy."
Cllr Smith said that while the community was in shock he had no doubt that the family would be supported in their hour of need and going forward.
