Man arrested after fatal assault in Co Kildare

A murder investigation is under way following a fatal attack on a man aged in his 30s in Co Kildare.

The 39-year-old man was found dead in a house in Sallins Park, Sallins just after 3am. He appears to have been stabbed.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested and is being detained at a garda station in Kildare.

Gardaí and the Emergency Services were called to the house at 3.15am, where they discovered the man's body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A number of people had been socialising at the house when the attack took place. The victim was originally from eastern Europe.

The area was sealed off and the State Pathologist's Office and the local coroner have been informed and the Garda Technical Bureau are carrying out a forensic examination.

The man's body has been removed from the scene and driven away in a private ambulance.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau also took a number of evidence bags from the house which is in a quiet residential area on a cul de sac.

Gardaí have commenced a murder investigation and an incident room has been set up at Naas Garda Station with a senior investigating officer appointed.

A family liaison officer has also been appointed to keep the victim's family informed of developments.

The arrested man is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

Gardaí are following a definite line in the investigation and say that they are not looking for anyone else at present.

It is understood that the victim was a father-of-three and that he suffered a single stab wound to the chest.

A local Fianna Fáil TD for Kildare North James Lawless, who lives nearby and knows the estate where the incident took place well, said: "I understand the parties were known to each other, the victim and the attacker."

"It seems to have been a social event and obviously it ended in tragedy. I think alcohol was a factor and these things can happen in any corner of Ireland," he added.

Neighbours said the house was normally very quiet and they had not heard any disturbance overnight.

Deputy Lawless said that what had happened was out of character for the area, which he described as a very close-knit community.

"It's going to come as a big shock and trauma to the entire community," he said.

"It's very quiet, very residential, very normal suburbia," he added.

He sent his condolences to the family and to the surrounding community.
