President Michael D Higgins will remain in hospital until Thursday after experiencing a mild transient weakness, Áras an Uachtaráin has confirmed.

The 82-year-old was admitted to St James's Hospital in Dublin last Thursday.

He is expected to make a full recovery after receiving positive results from medical tests, a statement said.

"They have indicated no serious or long-term concerns for the President’s health.

"Following consultation with his medical team, President Higgins has agreed with their recommendation that he remain in hospital for an extra few days in order that they can monitor his blood pressure," the statement added.

He will then return to Áras an Uachtaráin on Thursday.

The medical team has also advised the President to limit the extent of his public engagements over the coming weeks after recommending a "short period of recuperation".

He is expected to attend a scheduled meeting with the Taoiseach at Áras an Uachtaráin on Friday afternoon.

"The President remains in excellent spirits and is continuing to carry out his constitutional duties," the statement added.

President Higgins felt unwell at Áras an Uachtaráin last Thursday afternoon and was taken to hospital as a precaution on medical advice.

Last Wednesday, President Higgins presented the 2024 Volta award to British film director Steve McQueen, at the Dublin International Film Festival.

Earlier that day, he received a courtesy call from Bui Thanh Son, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.

He also met Peter Pellegrini, Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic and a parliamentary delegation to Áras an Uachtaráin.
