A 65-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal assault in Dundrum in Co Tipperary last month.
The attack happened last Sunday, but the victim did not attend hospital until Thursday and has since died.
Ivan Volkov, with an address at Holm Oak Cottages, Dundrum House Hotel, Dundrum, Co Tipperary appeared before a special sitting of the district court in Newcastle West.
Mr Volkov, who is originally from Ukraine, was charged with assault causing harm to 69-year-old Shamil Nabiev, an Azerbaijani national, and a second charge of affray, at Dundrum House Hotel on 25 February last.
Garda Pat Ahern of Tipperary Town Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.
When cautioned, he said Mr Volkov, through a Ukrainian interpreter, replied: "I didn't attack. I was defending myself."
Judge Carol Anne Coolican was told there was no objection to bail.
Solicitor Philip English asked that the judge direct that his client, who was on crutches, receive all necessary medical attention in prison.
Mr English also requested that she direct that an independent post-mortem examination be carried out on Mr Nabiev "given the victim has died in this case".
Judge Coolican granted the application for free legal aid and to cover an independent post-mortem examination.
She remanded Mr Volkov to Limerick Prison to appear again before the district court in Nenagh on 6 March.
