Murder probe launched into death of man in Macroom

Gardaí are treating the death of 61-year-old Michael Foley in Macroom, Co Cork, as murder.

Preliminary results of the post-mortem examination on Mr Foley's body have not been released, but it is understood they confirm injuries on his body are consistent with an assault.

The body of Mr Foley was discovered on Tuesday at his home at Annville, a small sheltered housing complex at Barrett's Place, near Macroom town centre.

Mr Foley, a separated father of four, was originally from Clonakilty in west Cork.

A technical and forensic examination took place at the property in Macroom yesterday.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster carried out an examination of the scene last night, before Mr Foley's body was removed to Cork University Hospital for the post mortem.

Michael Foley's brother, Timmy, died after being stabbed five years ago. His former wife, Rita O'Driscoll, was later found guilty of his murder.

A sister of the two men, Mary O'Driscoll, has described the family's loss as devastating.

"It's just all too hard to take in at once," she said.

Ms O'Driscoll said Mr Foley had moved to Macroom after his brother's death and drew comfort from the fact that Timmy had lived there.

She said it was a grief that the family never got over.

Another sister, Ann Foley, described her brother Michael as a gentleman.
