Three people die on roads during stormy weather

Three people have died on the roads on the island during the stormy weather over the last 24 hours.

Tens of thousands of homes and businesses across the country were left without power following Storm Isha which struck over the weekend.

High winds battered the country with gusts of between 133km/h and 137km/h recorded in counties Donegal and Galway last night.

A woman died following a crash in Co Louth in the early hours of this morning.

The woman, who was in her 20s, died after a van she was a passenger in crashed into a tree in Carnalogue, near Louth village, at around 1.50am.

A second passenger, a man in his 20s, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where his injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

No other injuries were reported. The road was closed for a technical examination and local diversions were put in place.

In Co Derry, a man in his 60s died during last night's storm. The PSNI said he was the driver of a van which struck a fallen tree and another van on Broad Road in Limavady at around 9.45pm.

The man who was driving the other van was taken to hospital.

Yesterday, a man in his 40s died in a single-car crash in Co Mayo.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene after the car he was driving crashed on the N17 at Lisduff in Claremorris.
