RTÉ has released details of staff surveys that show employees at the broadcaster want to see improvements in the areas of staff wellbeing and governance.

One survey focused on six factors that affect workplace pressures and the psychological wellness of employees at work: demands, control, support, relationships, role and change.

The survey was completed by 977 employees and it shows that staff feel RTÉ needs to make improvements in all six areas.

A second survey focused on governance at RTÉ and was designed to hear directly from staff about their personal experience of how the broadcaster is run day-to-day and to get suggestions about how best to improve it over the next 12 months.

The survey was completed by 680 employees and found a low level of "psychological safety" among RTÉ staff, meaning they do not feel comfortable when it comes to expressing ideas or concerns.

Compared to studies of other organisations, the survey concludes that the results compare unfavourably and "confirm the need for a detailed examination and overhaul of company culture at RTÉ."

Among the staff suggestions for improving RTÉ were cutting excessive salaries for top presenters and senior management, addressing pay anomalies, reducing the number of middle managers, confronting bullying behaviour and greater accountability for bad decisions.

In a message to staff, RTÉ Director of Human Resources Eimear Cusack said the findings of the surveys will be used to help guide future decisions in 2024.

"Your feedback makes it very clear that there is a lot more to do to make RTÉ a better place and we are committed to doing so," Ms Cusack said.

"Your ideas will be a valuable input into our plans," she added

Staff were also advised that a review of grades and roles within RTÉ is ongoing and that there will be a presentation to employees on the process in January.
