Some 151 new gardaí have graduated from Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary.

The new members, 113 men and 38 women, bring the total number of sworn gardaí to 14,023.

A further 348 recruit gardaí are currently in training.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris were in attendance.

Commissioner Harris said: "Recently we saw gardaí courageously put themselves in harm's way to protect the people of Dublin.

"This dedication, courage and professionalism in the face of significant vitriol and violence should be an inspiration and example to you all.

"It is our responsibility as serving gardaí to maintain the highest of standards. To act ethically. To act professionally. To act with integrity. To protect the human rights of everyone you come into contact with.

"It is what the public expect of you, and it is what I expect of you."

Commissioner Harris said the new gardaí were coming on stream earlier to increase garda visibility during the Christmas and New Year period.

Ms McEntee congratulated the recruits and said she wanted to "thank this group particularly for the commitment and flexibility they have shown in being deployed a month earlier than they had expected".

She said: "It is a shining example of the dedication to public service that makes An Garda Síochána the envy of many police services around the world.

"Their commitment to building stronger, safer communities is something to be commended and which we are all grateful for.

"Garda recruitment is well and truly back up and running and I am delighted to be able to announce that a new Garda recruitment campaign will launch on 15 January 2023."

Lorraine Delahunty, 33, from Cullohill, Co Laois, was working as a police officer in Australia and is now being stationed in Henry Street, Limerick.

"I'm looking forward to meeting my unit and facing all the challenges of a new career," she said.

"I’ve always wanted a career in An Garda Síochána and we’ve been trained to meet a challenging and dynamic work environment.

"No doubt it will be a scary time but I’m constantly learning and fully equipped to deal with those challenges."

Of the graduating class, 115 will be stationed in the Dublin Region and 20 in the Eastern Region.

The Southern and North Western Regions will receive eight new gardaí each.

Garda Manus Murphy is from Ballyfermot and takes up duty in Store Street Garda Station in Dublin.

"I originally worked in retail in Dublin city centre. And that's kind of where I developed my initial passion for interacting with people.

"I've been very, very fortunate to be stationed in Store St which is in a district that I know well from my previous career.

"I think I recognised I had not only a passion but a skill with communication from early on and I've always worked in roles where I was ready to help people.

"And I don't think there's a role you could aim for higher in society where you're helping people on the frontline. I should also mention that my fiancée is a nurse so I'm aware of the public service lifestyle and what that means for people."

Garda Fionnuala McCorry is from Belfast and was an Irish language teacher before she decided to pursue a career in policing.

"I came through the Irish language stream of the 2022 recruitment campaign and will be based in the Ráth Chairn Gaeltacht in County Meath.

"I'm so looking forward to starting out in my new career and my parents was so proud seeing me receive my badge this morning. The fact that I'm an Irish speaker working in a Gaeltacht area is such an added bonus."

Earlier, the Minister and Commissioner laid a wreath at the entrance to the college in memory of Recruit Garda Gary Sheehan who was murdered on duty 40 years ago on a search operation for kidnapped businessman Don Tidey.
