The 42-year-old was discovered unresponsive outside a house in the Garryowen area of the city in the early hours of this morning.

Just before 5am, gardaí were alerted to an incident at a house on Sarsfield Avenue.

When they arrived, they found a man outside the property and unresponsive.

Paramedics attended to him, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and is being questioned at a garda station in Limerick.

Gardaí were called to an incident at a house in Sarsfield Avenue in Garryowen at around 4.45am

The man who died has been named locally as Ger Curtin. He is from the local area and was known to gardaí.

He does not live at the house where he was found and gardaí are trying to piece together his final movement in the hour before his death.

John Nugent, Chairman of the Garryowen Resident Association said there was "deep shock and sadness" locally about the incident.

"This isn't something that happens on a regular basis. Our thoughts have to be with anyone that's been adversely affected by this," he said.

A technical examination of the scene was carried out by gardaí, who also conducted house-to-house inquiries in the area.

They are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of Sarsfield Avenue between 4am and 5.15am and who may have camera footage to contact them.
