Review at LUH after concerns over locum radiologist raised

Letterkenny University Hospital has said that a locum radiologist employed on a short-term contract in September 2023 had his contract terminated within ten days.

It followed concern being raised regarding the standard of their work.

During this time, the consultant had undertaken seven days of clinical activity.

A full review of the relevant clinician's work is under way to provide assurance regarding patient safety.

This involves X-rays and ultrasounds.

The hospital said that the Quality and Patient Safety service has a clear pathway in addressing any concerns raised regarding clinical care and this pathway is currently being followed.

"In the event that any cases of misdiagnosis come to light patients will be contacted with full open disclosure and appropriate arrangements put in place for follow up care, in accordance with national policy," it added.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, the Chief Clinical Director for the Saolta Group said any discrepancies that have been found have been notified and follow-up actions taken to ensure there is no delay or adverse effect to patient care.

Professor Pat Nash said: "I think this was identified early and responded to very promptly when concerns emerged about this radiologist's competency with regards to reporting tests."

He said that to date "we have not identified where there has been delays in care as a result, or where it had any impact.

"The reports were amended promptly and did not impact on the care to the individual patients."
