RTÉ's Director of Legal Paula Mullooly is to leave the organisation at the end of the year.

The broadcaster’s Director General Kevin Bakhurst made the announcement in an email to staff this evening, saying that Ms Mullooly made the decision for "personal reasons" after five years in the role.

"I would like to thank Paula for her exceptional professionalism and dedication, most especially over these last demanding months," Mr Bakhurst said.

"The expertise she brought to RTÉ from her time on the Compliance Committee of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, and as Chair of the Censorship of Publications Appeals Board from 2004 to 2012, was invaluable.

"No doubt our loss will be another organisation's welcome gain," he added.

RTÉ will be recruiting for a new Director of Legal in due course.
