A man has appeared in court in Co Kerry charged with the murder of 53-year-old Joe Brosnan in an apartment complex in Tralee last year.

Mr Brosnan was found with serious stab wounds in his apartment in Abbey Court in the centre of Tralee on the evening of 22 May, 2022. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The grandfather was originally from Connolly Park in Tralee and lived alone in the apartment.

Patrick Murphy, 51, and of no fixed abode, was arrested in England in recent days on foot of a trade and co-operation agreement arrest warrant and extradited yesterday.

He was then arrested at Dublin Airport by gardaí investigating the death of Mr Brosnan.

He was charged with the murder of Mr Brosnan and brought before a special sitting of Kenmare District Court this afternoon.

Detective Sergeant Mark O'Sullivan told the court that he arrested the accused yesterday evening at Dublin Airport and brought him to Tralee Garda Station.

He charged Mr Murphy early this morning with the murder of Mr Brosnan and the accused made no reply to the charge.

Inspector Danny Holland asked for a remand in custody and there was no application for bail, as bail cannot be granted in the district court on a murder charge.

Solicitor Dave Ramsey, for the accused, applied for legal aid. The court heard that Mr Murphy is unemployed.

Judge David Waters granted legal aid and remanded Mr Murphy in custody to appear before Tralee District Court, in person, next Wednesday.
