The Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation (INMO) has called for a meeting of the Emergency Department Task Force this week to discuss overcrowding and prepare for the autumn and winter period.
Today it said there were 526 patients waiting for admission to a hospital bed, with University Hospital Limerick the worst affected, with 115 patients waiting.
INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said she wanted the Health Service Executive (HSE) to convene a meeting of the task force to ensure there is not a repeat of figures earlier this year when all overcrowding records were broken.
Today's figure is lower than the same time last year when INMO figures put the level of overcrowding at 556 patients.
Under the HSE plan for this autumn/winter, it said the average monthly trolley count at 8am should not exceed 320 patients a day.
