Representatives of Ryan Tubridy told RTÉ's Director General yesterday that the presenter did not intend on "causing any difficulty for RTÉ" when he published a statement on Wednesday.

A clarification sent to Kevin Bakhurst, seen by RTÉ News, also stated that Mr Tubridy did not seek to infer that RTÉ was "incorrect" when it restated the presenters earnings last June.

It is understood, according to sources close to Mr Tubridy, that he believes he has been treated "very unfairly" by RTÉ.

On Wednesday, a second Grant Thornton review showed that Mr Tubridy did not play any role in the misstating of his salary from 2017 to 2019.

However, a statement issued by the presenter afterwards sparked concern at senior levels in RTÉ.

In his statement, Mr Tubridy said that it was "also clear that my actual income from RTÉ in 2020 and 2021 matches what was originally published as my earnings for those years".

RTÉ sought clarity over this, as it appeared as though Mr Tubridy disagreed with the RTÉ Board's restating of his earnings for that period last June, after the first Grant Thornton Review.

In a clarification sent on behalf of Mr Tubridy to Mr Bakhurst, it was stated that the presenter "was not in any way inferring that RTÉ was incorrect in relation to its restatements made in June 2023 in connection with the period 2017-2021".

It added that "our client had no intention of causing any difficulty for RTÉ in relation to his statement made yesterday".

According to the correspondence, Mr Tubridy was referring to a section of the second Grant Thornton review, which showed that payment figures from the RTÉ payroll system matched those originally stated by the broadcaster.

However, it is the view of the RTÉ Interim Management Team, the RTÉ Board and Grant Thornton that these figures do not reflect Mr Tubridy's true earnings during that period.

A spokesperson for RTÉ said that the organisation "sought clarification on two matters. These matters were not addressed to RTÉ's satisfaction".

They added that "regardless of the intent, Mr Tubridy's statement, and the timing and manner of its publication, damaged trust between both parties and that, along with a range of other issues outlined by Kevin Bakhurst resulted in the conclusion of the negotiations".

Mr Bakhurst told RTÉ's Nine News yesterday that he believed the clarification that he received was "basically a restatement of that statement".

This morning, Mr Bakhurst said that he stood by his decision to end negotiations with Mr Tubridy over his return to his programme on RTÉ Radio 1.
