The travel company TUI has cancelled all flights from Ireland and the UK to Rhodes until next weekend after the Greek island was hit by unprecedented wildfires.

In a statement, the firm that it has halted "all outbound flights to Rhodes - up to and including Friday 28th July".

TUI has also cancelled holidays for customers travelling to hotels affected by the outbreaks until next Sunday, 30 July.

The company said that it will "be in touch with customers directly if their hotels in the south of the island have been impacted".

Anyone who had booked a flight only will receive a full refund while package holiday customers will have the option to amend their booking or cancel with a full refund.

TUI - which has two flights per week from Ireland to Rhodes from May to September - said it is continuing to operate flights from the island to Ireland and the UK as scheduled and is monitoring the situation there "closely".

Earlier, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin said that it would be "proper" for travel firms to refund holidaymakers who want to cancel trips to parts of Greece hit by wildfires.

Speaking at a Defence Forces event at the Curragh Barracks in Co Kildare, Mr Martin said: "I think a refund should be the proper" response in that scenario.

The Tánaiste said that any Irish citizen in the affected areas should contact their tour operator immediately, and evacuate if told to do so "without hesitation".

He said the Department of Foreign Affairs has received an increased number of queries from Irish citizens in Greece, and that in some instances emergency passports have been issued.

The Government is "doing everything" it can to help people leave affected parts of Greece, Mr Martin, added, and that the most important issue is "to prioritise human life".

Meanwhile, Ryanair and Aer Lingus flights are operating as normal to Greece.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has advised Irish citizens to be alert, follow local advice and stay away from affected areas.

A national holiday in Greece, planned for today, has been cancelled.

President of the Irish Travel Agents' Association Paul Hackett said it is important that flights continue to fly to and from Greece.

Mr Hackett said there are probably more Irish people in Corfu than Rhodes because more flights operate to Corfu.

"Rhodes has approximately four flights per week from Ireland," he said.

"So you're talking in the order of 700 to 800 passengers per week.

"TUI have two flights per week and Ryanair have two flights per week, instead of four flights. Corfu has six flights per week two with TUI, two with Aer Lingus and two with Ryanair."

He encouraged anyone who is due to travel over the coming days to talk to their travel agents if they have concerns.
