Irish father and son die in Turkish road crash

A father and son from Co Laois have died following a road crash while on a family holiday in Turkey.

Eoin Fitzpatrick, 36, and his ten-year-old son Dylan were killed when the moped they were travelling on was involved in a collision around 3.30pm local time yesterday in the tourist town of Alanya.

Eoin's 16-year-old son Cian, who was also on the holiday, was not involved in the crash.

The Turkish authorities have said an investigation is under way.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

"As with all consular cases, the department does not comment on the details of any specific case," a spokesperson said.

Family members in Co Laois are travelling to Turkey in the wake of the tragedy.

Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, who knows the family, said there is "shock and devastation" in the town of Portlaoise following the incident.

"They were due to fly home today as I understand it," the Laois-Offaly TD said. "They live a few doors away from me."

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, he said: "The ten-year-old would have been very popular here in the neighbourhood.

"The 16-year-old is okay and is still in Turkey," adding that he has spoken to a parent of Eoin Fitzpatrick who died.

Mr Stanley said: "They have lost a son and lost a grandson. Nothing could prepare you for it.

"The Turkish police notified the other family members who were in the resort at the time.

"News was coming through yesterday evening around teatime but some of it was confusing.

"My heartfelt sympathies goes to the mother of the boy and to the parents of the deceased man.

"In the days and weeks ahead the community here in Portlaoise will rally around both families."

Monsignor John Byrne from Portlaoise Parish, said the family was due to return to Ireland today.

"All seemed to be going well and then this awful tragedy stuck," he said

"It's so sad for the Fitzpatrick family and the Dowling family, the other grandparents.

"Really shocking news, they were supposed to be back in Dublin airport this morning, at the end of their holiday.

"We're so upset. There's a dark cloud hanging over Portlaoise today."

Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, Monsignor Byrne added that the parish is rallying around the bereaved family.

"A wave of shock and sympathy has been extended to them," he said.

"We know that the family have difficult days ahead.

"Please God with the support of their family and the community that it will help," Monsignor Byrne added, noting that the Fitzpatrick family is "very much associated with Portlaoise GAA".

"People are trying to get their heads around this and support the family in prayer and general support," he said.

"There is a strong community here and they're well embedded in the community."

The Fitzpatrick family were heavily involved with Portlaoise GAA club.

Eoin Fitzpatrick played with his club to adult level and also played hurling for his county at minor level.

The club said Mr Fitzpatrick was a talented hurler and his family have continued to be immersed in the club.

Portlaoise GAA said Eoin's eldest son Cian plays with the club under-16s.
