Two men have been killed while taking part in a Co Sligo rally, Motorsport Ireland has confirmed.

The Sligo Stages Rally was halted following the serious incident at Carrowcushcly in Ballymote at around 3pm.

The driver, who was in his 30s and the passenger, who was in his 40s, both died after their car hit a wall during the sixth stage of the rally.

The men's bodies were brought to Sligo University Hospital where post-mortems are due to take place.

A technical examination of the scene is currently under way.

In a statement, Motorsport Ireland said it extended its deepest sympathies to the families and friends of two competitors.

Gardaí have asked that footage of this collision at the Sligo Stages Rally is not shared across social media or messaging applications.

"Anyone with video footage is asked to make this available to gardaí," the statement adds.

The Connacht Motor Club, which promotes the Sligo Stages Rally confirmed the incident, adding that a further statement will be issued "in due course".

Motorsport Ireland also said it has begun a full investigation with the relevant authorities into the incident.
