Rory Coveney resigns as RTÉ Director of Strategy

Rory Coveney has resigned from his role as RTÉ Director of Strategy with immediate effect.

In a statement issued by RTÉ, Mr Coveney said he met incoming Director General Kevin Bakhurst and told him that he "believed the tough job ahead of him would be made somewhat easier if he had a fresh lead team".

"I've tendered my resignation immediately to give him the space to do that," Mr Coveney said.

In the same statement Mr Bakhurst, who is due to formally take up his role on Monday, thanked Mr Coveney for his "significant contribution to public service media during his time in RTÉ".

Asked whether Mr Coveney stepping down from his role as Director of Strategy also meant that he had resigned fully from RTÉ, an RTÉ spokesperson confirmed that he was leaving the organisation.

Mr Coveney has worked at RTÉ since 2007 in a variety of roles.

Asked if Mr Coveney had been offered a severance package or financial compensation by RTÉ, a spokesperson responded: "RTÉ is not in a position to provide employment information relating to individuals.

"Mr Coveney has committed to cooperating with RTÉ on any matter where he can assist.

"We will not be commenting further on Mr Coveney's departure."

As Director of Strategy Mr Coveney was a member of the RTÉ Executive Board, who have appeared before a number of Oireachtas committees in recent weeks following revelations around the under-declaration of payments made to presenter Ryan Tubridy.

Those revelations have led to investigations around further spending at the broadcaster.

Documentation given to the Oireachtas Committee on Media last week confirms losses at Toy Show: The Musical reached €2.2 million, with just over 11,000 tickets being sold for the shows.

Last month, Mr Coveney told the Oireachtas Media Committee that he was "responsible for the project in one sense".

Speaking at a subsequent meeting of the committee last week, he admitted that the musical was a "creative and commercial risk".

He said those who attended the musical loved it, and that the loss was not down to lack of effort.

Meanwhile Mr Bakhurst has said it is "time for action" at RTÉ.

Mr Bakhurst is due to contact staff via email "first thing in the morning" before informally meeting staff on site in Dublin.

Early on Monday morning Mr Bakhurst will update staff on changes he will make to try to restore public confidence in RTÉ.

He has been urged by the Government to take radical steps with the Taoiseach hinting that perhaps he could "get rid" of RTÉ's executive board.
