Minister for Finance Michael McGrath said that RTÉ is to be brought under the remit of NewERA, a division of the National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA) that provides financial and commercial advice to state companies.

Bodies that are designated to NewERA include An Post, Bord na Móna, CIÉ, Coillte, daa, ESB and the Irish Aviation Authority.

In the past, the Government has received advice from NewERA about RTÉ but it was not a formally designated company.

That will now change under plans by the minister to bring the broadcaster under the remit of the advisory body.

"I have seen first-hand the way in which they can provide support to ministers in making critical decisions and I think it is certainly the case that RTÉ would benefit from having a relationship with NewERA," Mr McGrath said.

He added that work is at a very advanced stage and that the process should be completed within a matter of weeks.

Bringing RTÉ under the remit of NewERA was something the Government was already considering following a recommendation from the Future of Media Commission.

Mr McGrath said the recent payments controversy at RTÉ confirmed that they were making the right decision.
