Gardaí have lifted the road closure at the public car park leading to the viewing point at Sliabh Liag in Co Donegal.

Access to the area had been closed since Monday, as gardaí carried out an investigation into an alleged serious assault in the area last Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

However, it is understood there is still a garda operation ongoing and not all areas of the cliffs may be accessible to the public.

A number of local tourism and hospitality businesses have posted that they are welcoming people back to Sliabh Liag "as gardaí re-open access".

"We've all given full support to the gardaí during their extensive investigations," one said.

"It's been a long week but we're ready, we welcome you all again."

It has been confirmed locally that the shuttle bus service to the viewing area at Bunglás will resume tomorrow morning from 10.10am.

Yesterday, the Garda Water Unit was involved in searches in the area of Teileann pier close to the cliffs.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said that the investigation could be upgraded to a murder investigation if necessary.

Commissioner Harris has appealed for the public's help in relation to their investigation.

He also said the investigation is being appropriately resourced "for the seriousness of the offence that we believe has happened".
