Motorists are likely to face a second hike in toll rates within six months, according to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Tolls are already due to increase from this weekend.

Executive member of the Coach Tourism and Transport Council (CTTC) Feargal Barton said to hear that more hikes could be on the way is very disappointing news.

Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, he said the coach industry is recovering from Covid-19 and the devastation it had on many people who play an integral role in delivering an efficient, reliable public transport network service.

Mr Barton said it is becoming very difficult for operators to sustain the cost level, meaning it will have to be passed onto the consumer.

"If you look at the tolls and the location of the tolls, we have trucks and we have coaches and we have operators avoiding the tolls, going into towns going through roads that aren't suitable for large vehicles, purely to avoid the tolls."

He added that if costs are increased for coach services, people will look to use alternatives and use their cars.

Mr Barton said if the CTTC continues to endure costings that are "going through the roof", they must be chased down and there must be a situation where an operator remains profitable, or they will not be able to remain in business.

He said he hopes the Government looks at the council's policy and how it wants to remove people from cars into coach vehicles.
