Ryan Tubridy apologises for failing to ask questions about published earnings

Ryan Tubridy has said he apologises unreservedly for failing to ask questions about why incorrect figures regarding his earnings were published by RTÉ.

In a statement, Mr Tubridy said he was disappointed that RTÉ had decided that for editorial reasons he should not broadcast his radio programme next week.

But he said he looked forward to returning to the programme as soon as possible.

It follows the revelations yesterday that Mr Tubridy was paid €345,000 above his annual published salary over a period of several years.

In a statement, Mr Tubridy said: "RTÉ's accounting treatment and publication of payments made to me between 2017 and 2022 contained serious errors.

"While I have no responsibility for the corporate governance in RTÉ or how or what they publish in their accounts, when my earnings were published I should have asked questions at the time and sought answers as to the circumstances which resulted in incorrect figures being published.

"I didn't, and I bear responsibility for my failure to do so. For this, I apologise unreservedly."

In his statement, Mr Tubridy said that all his earnings at the broadcaster "have at all times been included in my company's accounts that were prepared by my accountant and filed with the Companies Registration Office and all my taxes are up to date.

"My filed accounts with details of these earnings have previously been reported on in the media."

He also denies that the issue had any bearing on his decision to step down from hosting The Late Late Show.

Mr Tubridy denied that he has not taken a pay cut over the last number of years, saying that he has taken "several reductions in salary". He said that between 2012 and today, his pay from RTÉ was cut by around 40%.

Mr Tubridy said he will not be presenting his show on RTÉ Radio 1 next week, saying that he is "disappointed that RTÉ has decided that for editorial reasons I should not broadcast my radio show next week".

He also said that he looks forward to returning to his show "as soon as possible".

Earlier today, the RTÉ Board announced that Director General Dee Forbes was suspended from her employment on Wednesday of this week.

Moya Doherty, the former chair of the RTÉ Board, said that at no time did she or other members of the board have knowledge of any issue relating to certain payments and the profoundly serious lack of transparency involved.
