Husband charged with murdering wife at Dublin home

A 51-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his wife at their home in Dublin.

Anna Mooney, 46, was found stabbed to death at the house in Kilbarrack in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services discovered her body lying on the floor in the kitchen.

Stephen Mooney, of Kilbarrack Road, was remanded in custody to appear again before Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.

Detective Sergeant Basil Grimes gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution today.

He told the court that Mr Mooney was arrested at 3am this morning and when he was charged with the murder of Ms Mooney he replied "no comment".

He was handed a copy of the charge.

There was no application for bail as bail cannot be granted in the district court on a murder charge.

However, defence solicitor Phelim O'Neill applied for free legal aid for Mr Mooney and handed in a statement of means.

He also told the court that Mr Mooney had to be attended to by a doctor on a number of occasions while in custody and there was concern over his blood pressure.

Mr Mooney sat in the dock wearing a black hoodie and grey tracksuit bottoms.

He did not speak during the brief hearing.

Judge Smyth granted him free legal aid and directed that he receive appropriate medical attention in prison.

The judge remanded Mr Mooney in custody to appear again by video link at Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.
