A former senior garda officer arrested on suspicion of sex offences has been released without charge.
Gardaí say the investigation is ongoing and a file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
He was arrested yesterday and questioned at a Dublin garda station.
The officer has been under investigation for some time by local detectives in Dublin.
The investigation commenced following a complaint and interviews have been carried out.
He was questioned about the alleged offences of rape and sexual assault.
The officer served at a senior level in An Garda Síochána for many years.
Garda Headquarters confirmed that a male who was a former garda had been arrested in connection with alleged offences under the Criminal Law (Rape) Amendment Act 1990.
The legislation covers serious sexual offences such as sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault and rape.
The statement also said that the man was now a private citizen and was detained at a Dublin garda station.
He was detained under Section 4 of Criminal Justice Act and released last night.
