Ground handling company Swissport has said an "urgent investigation" is under way following an incident involving the repatriation of a man's body to Ireland.

It follows a report in the Sunday Independent that a coffin carrying the Irish citizen was not removed from a plane at Dublin Airport, as intended.

It is reported that the man's remains were then flown back to Greece, where he had passed away.

Swissport said it is "now conducting an urgent investigation to make sure lessons are learned".

A spokesperson for the company said: "We are deeply sorry for the family’s experience at such a difficult time."

Swissport also added that it "did everything we could to ensure things were resolved quickly".

The newspaper reported that the man's remains were repatriated by another airline the following day.
