A 37-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Slovakian man in Co Kildare last month.
Damien Szatkowski with an address at Peachville, Kilshane, Dublin 11, was brought before a special sitting of Naas District Court yesterday.
He was arrested yesterday in connection with the death of Marcel Kusenda, who was found with serious injuries outside a house in Piercetown in Newbridge on the morning of 8 March.
The victim, who was aged in his 40s, was taken to Naas General Hospital when he died from his injuries two days later.
Damien Szatkowski was charged at Newbridge Garda Station yesterday afternoon with the murder of Mr Kusenda.
The court was told that gardaí are awaiting directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions, with the case file still open and the investigations into the incident ongoing.
Solicitor Barry Powderly applied for free legal aid and he requested that the prison authorities are directed to provide medication to his client, who he said had a gastro illness.
Due to the seriousness of the charge, no application for bail could be made at the District Court level.
Judge Desmond Zaidan granted the application for legal aid, subject to a statement of means being provided to the court.
He also ordered that the accused should undergo a medical assessment for his illness.
Damien Szatkowski made no comment during the brief appearance other than to confirm there was no language barrier and he did not require a translator.
He has been remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison in Dublin to appear before Naas District Court again on Thursday, 27 April, via videolink.
