A man has been arrested in connection with alleged fraud offences.
The man was arrested in the south of the country on Wednesday morning and is being questioned at a garda station.
Gardaí have been investigating allegations that he raised money by deception under alleged false pretences.
A number of people have told detectives that the man told them he was suffering from a medical condition and sought money from them for treatment that he did not have.
The man is being questioned in relation to allegations that he had requested and received money from a number of people, including wealthy businesspeople.
A number of other people who were approached did not give the man any money.
The garda investigation is being led by a local team of detectives, which has also consulted specialists from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau.
Statements have been taken from a number of alleged victims and searches have been carried out.
