The HSE is conducting a review after an elderly woman, who went missing from a district hospital in Carlow yesterday, was found dead this morning.

Sheila Rice, who was 87 and from Carlow, was an inpatient at the district hospital in the town and walked out of the facility on her own before 4pm yesterday.

A search operation was mounted involving family members, gardaí, HSE staff, volunteers and members of the Civil Defence.

The search was stood down this morning after a body was found in the Strawhall area of Carlow, not far from where Mrs Rice went missing.

This afternoon, the HSE said it had established a serious incident management team to conduct a review into what happened.

It thanked all those who took part in the search and extended condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased woman.
