Taxi booking service Free Now has ended its sponsorship of The Tommy Tiernan Show on RTÉ, saying it is "disappointed about the comments made at his Vicar Street gig regarding taxi drivers".

The firm said it works in close partnership with taxi drivers throughout the country to provide an important transport service for passengers across Ireland.

"Prejudice of any kind towards taxi drivers is unacceptable," it said.

It decided to conclude its sponsorship of the show last week but "will continue to work with RTÉ on other projects going forward".

Earlier this week RTÉ presenter Emer O'Neill said the comedian and talk-show host phoned her to apologise for a joke he made at a recent comedy gig she was attending in Dublin's Vicar Street.

The former Home School Hub presenter walked out of Mr Tiernan's Tomfoolery show earlier this month after he made a joke that offended her during his stand-up set.

Mr Tiernan has since apologised and removed the joke from the show.

In a statement RTÉ confirmed that Free Now has decided not to continue its sponsorship of the Tommy Tiernan Show on RTÉ One.

"We look forward to working with Free Now again in the future," the statement added.
