New figures show the number of people experiencing homelessness has hit another record high.

There were 11,542 people accommodated by homeless services in November.

That compares to 11,397 a month earlier, which is an increase of 1.2%.

However, the latest figures are up a substantial 26.8% on the same period a year earlier.

The figures were released by the Department of Housing this afternoon.

Organisations lobbying on behalf of homeless individuals point out the increase has come during a ban on evictions, which is due to expire in 12 weeks.

Wayne Stanley, Executive Director of the Simon Communities, said: "The actions taken while the current moratorium is in place will go a long way to defining what can be achieved in homelessness in the coming year.

"In the face of the homelessness crisis, the Government took the important step of bringing in the moratorium on evictions.

"Now we need to see momentum on the provision of secure affordable accommodation to those in homelessness in the coming weeks and throughout 2023.

"Otherwise, we are facing into ongoing extensions and renewals of the eviction ban and that's not a long-term solution."

Focus Ireland CEO Pat Dennigan said: "Without further urgent action, we will come to the end of the eviction ban in March, with emergency homeless accommodation still full up, and facing into a new wave of spring evictions.

"We can no longer rely on private sector to provide a route out of homelessness, highlighting the importance of new social housing units that will become available over the next few months."

Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien said homelessness "remains a top priority for this Government".

He said: "Regrettably we have seen a significant increase in the numbers of people experiencing homelessness in the past couple of months.

"This further emphasises the absolute need for the winter eviction moratorium which is in place from November until April 1st.

"Resources and funding are not an issue to the urgent efforts required. We will use the time of the moratorium period to accelerate the delivery of much needed social homes which will help those who are experiencing homelessness."

Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin said the figures were "further evidence that the Government's housing [policy] is failing.

He added: "We need an emergency response from the Minister for Housing both to increase the supply of social housing and to reduce the flow of singles and families into homelessness."
