ESB repair crews have restored power to most homes and businesses in Munster and south Leinster that were without electricity following weather-related damage.

Yesterday evening an ESB spokesperson said crews were "going to work through the night to get power restored for people and will be dispatched again from first light, but they will try to do as many tonight as is possible".

There were some localised outages remaining around the country, although an outage that was affecting more than 400 customers in Waterford city has been rectified.

People living in rural areas whose electricity has been cut are being urged to report the fault and not to assume that ESB know about their outage.

Thousands of people across the south and southeast were without power for periods yesterday, as thunder and lightening tracked eastwards across the country.

The spokesperson said the majority of these had been "quick fixes" but the sheer volume of faults resulted in so many homes and businesses being without power.

The weather conditions also delayed power restoration in some areas, the spokesperson added.
