President Michael D Higgins has paid tribute to CervicalCheck campaigner Lynsey Bennett, who has died at the age of 34.

In a statement yesterday afternoon, her solicitor Gillian O'Mahony said Ms Bennett passed away peacefully on Thursday night.

The mother-of-two was diagnosed with an invasive form of cervical cancer in 2017, following the alleged misinterpretation of smear slides.

In 2021, she settled a case she took against the HSE and various other parties.

Speaking outside the Four Courts at the time, she vowed to fight to stay alive for as long as she could.

In a statement, President Higgins said "people throughout Ireland will have been deeply saddened" to hear of Ms Bennett's death.

"All those who watched or heard interviews with Lynsey will have been struck by what an outstanding young woman Lynsey was, driven by a powerful love for her daughters Zoë and Hailee, and by the strength with which she confronted the challenges which she faced," he said.

"What she had to take on, and did so with such conviction and courage, was and will be to the benefit of all women, and thus to all of us."

President Higgins sent condolences to Ms Bennett's family and friends.
