There have been renewed calls from a group of Fianna Fáil TDs for the creation of a dedicated garda transport unit in the capital.

They claim a survey of 1,300 people conducted by the party suggests that 93% of commuters have witnessed some form of anti-social behaviour on public transport and 78% of those questioned want gardaí patrolling on public transport.

Fianna Fáil TD for Dún Laoghaire and party spokesperson on Dublin Cormac Devlin said the survey indicated that 73% of those questioned did not report such incidences and this meant there was a requirement for a radical overhaul of the process.

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Bay South Jim O'Callaghan said he attended a National Bus and Railworkers Union conference earlier this week and delegates were saying that "the level of violence that their members are experiencing is growing and it's unprecedented."

However, the TDs were challenged on the scientific nature of their survey, which was not conducted by a polling agency.
