Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee has said she will be bringing a bill before the Dáil next week aimed at strengthening the law in terms of monitoring sex offenders.

Minister McEntee said the proposals would be used by gardaí in situations where they feel people might be at risk.

"For example, they would be able to show a particular photograph to a principal in a school where perhaps concerns have been raised around an individual who is on the sex offenders register," she said.

Ms McEntee said she believed the likelihood that there would be a case of mistaken identity would be very slim.

The minister said this will not be "picture being put up on social media picture online being shared widely. This will be very specific. It will be very focused on where there might be particular concerns"

She said these proposals were aimed at making sure Ireland has the most comprehensive and strongest law in place for monitoring sex offenders.

The proposals could be enacted before the end of the month, Minister McEntee said.
